Last week, the government began offering buyouts to over 2 million full-time federal workers
Senior US officials say over 20,000 government employees, around 1% of the workforce, have accepted the Trump administration’s buyout offer.
However, unions representing workers have filed a lawsuit against the offer on Tuesday.
Last week, the government began offering buyouts to over 2 million full-time federal workers. They have till Thursday to accept the offer that gives them full benefits and pay till September 30.
The White House aims to reduce 5–0% of its capacity, and more resignations could come before the deadline.
Notably, the normal federal annual attrition rate is 6%. So, some of those leaving may have already planned to resign.
The buyout’s impact remains uncertain, but the White House sees it as a key step in restructuring the government. But critics warn of potential chaos.
