The Supreme Court said it will decide whether to block a $10 billion lawsuit Mexico filed against US gun makers

The Supreme Court said yesterday that it will consider whether to block the Mexican government’s $10 billion lawsuit against American gun manufacturers over cartel violence.

The case argues that negligent and illegal commercial practices by gun manufacturers and distributors caused bloodshed in the country.

The gun makers, including Glock, Smith & Wesson, Beretta, and Colt, asked the justices to undo a ruling by an appeals court that allowed the case to move forward. It was blocked by a 2005 law that provides broad legal protections to the firearm industry.

In the suit, Mexico claims 70% of the weapons trafficked to the country come from the US.
