Agatha, the first hurricane of 2022 in the eastern Pacific, made landfall in southern Mexico near Puerto Angel Monday. With maximum sustained winds reaching 105 mph, the hurricane hit Mexico as a Category 2 storm, per the National Hurricane Center.
Agatha is slowly moving north towards the Mexican Pacific coast.
Forecasters warned that the Mexican state of Oaxaca could expect 10 to 16 inches of rainfall overnight. Tuesday will see heavy rainfall, and the storm could pose dangerous flash floods and mudslides.
A hurricane warning was in effect for the town Puerto Escondido of Oaxaca state to Boca de Pijijiapan, Chiapas and between the port of Salina Cruz and the Lagunas de Chacahua.
The storm will disappear widely by Wednesday, and its impact may bring about a redevelopment this week in the Gulf of Mexico.
“The eastern Pacific is likely to experience a subnormal number of tropical storms this year,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center said.
