New York Lieutenant Governor Brian Benjamin resigned from his position on Tuesday, after getting indicted for federal bribery and fraud.

The Lieutenant Governor was accused of directing state donations toward a real estate developer in exchange for campaign contributions.

Governor Kathy Hochul, who nominated Benjamin for Lieutenant Governor last August, announced his resignation a couple of hours after Benjamin pleaded not guilty in the Manhattan federal court.

“New Yorkers deserve absolute confidence in their government, and I will continue working every day to deliver for them,” Hochul stated.

Brian Benjamin is expected to appear in court on April 19. His charges would likely complicate Governor Houchul’s reelection bid, starting in November.
