James Bennet, the former editor of the New York Times editorial, apologized in testimony Thursday for mistakes that led to the defamation lawsuit Sarah Palin brought against the newspaper over the 2017 editorial.

He admitted to writing those sentences in the Times article titled "America's Lethal Politics'—the article followed a shooting of several Republican members of Congress. The article claimed a relationship between Sarah Palin’s political action committee and a mass shooting of several Republican members of the Congress. The 2017 article drew a link between the said shooting and a previous one in 2011 that wounded then-Democratic Rep. Gabriel Giffords.

The Times modified the article the next day, and even mentioned that there was no link between Palin's committee's post and the shooting.
