The Digital Markets Act (DMA) proposed by the European Union could make tech giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Microsoft open their platforms to other businesses.
“What we want is simple: fair markets...in digital,” said Executive Vice President of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager. Her proposal gained support from the European Union members and lawmakers.
Some notable rules proposed by the EU
The rules imposed on these tech giants would mainly make them pave the way for other businesses.
-
Apple would be required to become lenient over users so they can use other search engines other than the phone’s default web browser—Safari web.
-
Tech companies should allow users to choose their desired web browser, voice assistance, and maps on their devices.
-
The tech platforms should give liberty to the user to choose their desired messaging service.
How does this impact the users?
The rules proposed under the DMA will probably give more freedom to users, as they will finally have a choice to use their desired tech platform. The rules can make an iPhone user uninstall the default Safari web and can use the search engine, which they feel comfortable with.
The European Commission will finalize its method to enforce the Digital Markets Act and pass the proposal by summer.
