Americans’ approval rating of President Donald Trump, as he nears 100 days in office, dropped 41%—the lowest for any new US president dating back to Dwight Eisenhower, finds an April CNN poll.
It is a stark contrast to the stellar poll numbers Trump had when taking office on January 20.
In the CNN poll of 1,678 adults, only 22% strongly approved of his performance, while 45% strongly disapproved. Support among women, Hispanic Americans and independents declined sharply.
There has been a notable drop in ratings since March when Trump initiated a slew of tariffs that worried investors and the public about price hikes and shaking the stock market.
Confidence in Trump’s handling of the economy fell 13 points since December to 52%. Only 35% approve of his handling of inflation and tariffs.
Trump’s only bright spot was on gender identity issues, where 51% approved of his performance.
Additionally, around 52% of Americans believe his presidency will bring lasting change to the US.
Meanwhile, a new AP-NORC poll shows most Americans, including Republicans, think Trump’s second term is heading in the wrong direction.
