Vice President Kamala Harris announced a plan to expand Medicare coverage for long-term at-home care for the elderly during her Tuesday appearance on The View.
The initiative aims to assist millions of Americans, particularly the “sandwich generation,” caring for children and aging parents. According to Pew Research Center, about 47% of US adults in their 40s and 50s belong to this category.
Under her proposal, Medicare would cover services like in-home aides, speech therapy and physical therapy. It currently offers limited at-home support, pushing many into costly nursing homes.
Harris aims to fund this plan by using savings from negotiating lower drug prices. The Brookings Institution estimates the Medicare expansion plan could cost around $40 billion annually.
