Mike Johnson re-elected as House Speaker amid challenges

Rep. Mike Johnson was re-elected as House Speaker with a narrow 218-215 vote, aided by the support of President-elect Donald Trump.

Three Republicans initially opposed him. But Johnson won in the first round after convincing two Republicans to vote in his favor.

With Republicans controlling the House and Senate, Congress will reconvene Monday to certify President-elect Donald Trump’s victory. 

Republicans face challenges with a slim House majority, and bipartisan support may be needed for most Senate legislation. 

Johnson announced plans to move Trump’s budget resolution this month.
