The head of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, resigned on Tuesday, a day after bipartisan scrutiny on Capitol Hill over the security failures that allowed a 20-year-old gunman to open fire on former President Donald Trump in an attempted assassination on July 13 in Pennsylvania.

In an email to Secret Service employees, Cheatle wrote that she didn’t want calls for her to quit to become a distraction.

The incident resulted in one death and injuries to Trump and two others. Cheatle accepted responsibility for security lapses but declined to provide specifics, citing an ongoing FBI investigation.
