The Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s request to allow the Postal Service to restrict certain mail-in ballots for the November midterm elections.
Trump’s proposal called for uniform envelope designs and required states to submit eligible voter lists to an online portal. The plan would have allowed the Postal Service to reject ballots that did not meet the new requirements.
The ruling allows states to continue using their established mail-voting procedures. Alabama, North Carolina and Wisconsin have already started sending mail ballots to voters.
Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas publicly dissented. The Supreme Court also noted that the push to enforce restrictions this year would likely fail in court.
