Bluesky had under 9 million users in October|@bluesky|X

The social media site that started as a Twitter (now X) internal project, Bluesky, passed the 15 million user mark after reportedly gaining over 1 million new users since the election.

Engadget notes Bluesky had under 9 million users a month ago.

The surge aligns with a spike in account deactivations on Elon Musk-owned X around the presidential election, as reported by SimilarWeb.

On November 7 alone, over 115,000 US users deleted their X accounts.

Though Meta’s Threads remains much larger at 275 million users and holds a mobile usage lead, Bluesky’s distinct push, including outreach to Threads users, has elevated its popularity.

Bluesky’s appeal lies in its innovative features like user-generated moderation tools and custom feeds, providing a more personal, less algorithm-driven experience. The service’s rapid growth underscores social media users’ discontent with X and interest in alternatives.
