The Facebook and Instagram parent said yesterday it is changing its rules regarding hate speech to remove posts that target “Zionists” when the term is used to refer to Jewish people and Israelis.
The decision comes after the company said it conducted a months-long inquiry and consulted academics and civil rights experts into the historical versus current usage of the term on social media.
“Going forward, we will remove content attacking ‘Zionists’ when it is not explicitly about the political movement, but instead uses antisemitic stereotypes, or threatens other types of harm through intimidation, or violence directed against Jews or Israelis under the guise of attacking Zionists,” Meta said in a blog post.
