Shopify, the e-commerce website builder, recently received a memo from CEO Tobi Lutke indicating that no new hires will be approved unless managers can prove AI can’t do the job instead.

The move reflects Shopify’s all-in AI approach. It has urged teams to weave the tech into their daily workflows to boost productivity.

Shopify is betting that automation will help it continue expanding beyond its core base of small businesses and target bigger clients.

The Canada-based e-commerce firm cut 200 jobs in 2023 and had around 8,100 employees working remotely at the end of last year. The shift reflects a broader trend, with AI-related job postings up even as hiring slows.
