Chrome is the most used browser in the world.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) remains firm in its demand to break up Google, urging Judge Amit Mehta to order the sale of its Chrome browser to restore competition.
Chrome is currently the most used browser in the world.
The push follows a ruling in August, where Judge Mehta determined that Google illegally maintains a monopoly in online search by paying companies like Apple and Samsung to prioritize its search engine.
As part of its proposed remedies, the DOJ suggests Google should share its search data with competitors and potentially divest its Android operating system.
Google plans to appeal the ruling. However, Lee-Anne Mulholland, the company’s vice president of regulatory affairs, recently indicated a willingness to ease contract restrictions—allowing users to install Google apps without requiring installation of its search engine or Gemini AI.
Judge Amit Mehta is expected to issue a final decision by summer.
Meanwhile, Google continues to face other antitrust woes, including a US case targeting its ad tech business and a cease-and-desist from Japan’s FTC.
