Amazon, Google and Meta pledged support on Wednesday to at least triple global nuclear energy by 2050.
They joined a nonbinding pledge signed in 2023 by over 20 countries, including the US, at the UN Climate Change Conference. Financial giants like Bank of America and Goldman Sachs also backed it.
With AI centers driving massive energy demand and renewables’ limitations, tech companies see nuclear plants as an essential and reliable source of power.
Amazon and Google invested in small nuclear reactors last October, while Meta sought proposals in December for up to 4 gigawatts of new nuclear power. Microsoft announced a deal in September to revive part of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania.
