Popular spring break vacation spot Miami has announced new rules aimed at controlling the chaos typically associated with the annual event. It includes curfews, DUI checkpoints, parking lot closures and bag checks at beach entrances.
The move is to curb the violence that has risen over the past few years in Miami. Last year, it saw two fatal shootings during spring break.
The Vice City even released a commercial warning visitors of actions they would face for illegal activities, which include - loud music without a permit, alcohol and cigarettes on beaches, drug possession and violence.
Additionally, parking fees will be increased to $30 for visitors. Illegal short-term rentals could face fines of up to $5,000 per day. Streetside cafes along Ocean Drive will be closed during the second and third weekends of March.
Despite these measures, residents and visitors continue to enjoy the city’s vibrant atmosphere. Miami travel volume for spring break is expected to increase by 6% compared to last year.
Other travel destinations like Orlando and cruise departures from Florida are also experiencing increased bookings.
