Wildfires tore through North and South Carolina on Sunday, burning thousands of acres and forcing evacuations near Myrtle Beach and the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Dry, windy conditions fueled the flames, with over 175 wildfires scorching 4,200 acres in South Carolina, mainly in the Pee Dee region.

Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency.

The largest fire, near Carolina Forest, burned 1,600 acres and was 30% contained by Sunday night. Though evacuation orders were lifted, emergency crews remain.

In North Carolina, a 500-acre fire in Polk County remains uncontained. Firefighters are also battling blazes in four national forests.

The National Weather Service warned of high fire risks across the Eastern US due to dry conditions. Firefighters continue battling blazes from the ground and air.
