OpenAI stated that it is dropping the idea due to not enough evidence on the harm long-term adult chats and AI attachment can cause to humans

ChatGPT maker OpenAI has “indefinitely” paused the release of its controversial erotic chatbot, called “Citron Mode,” reportedly following intense internal debate and pressure from investors.

OpenAI stated that it is dropping the idea due to insufficient “empirical evidence” on the harm that long-term adult chats and AI attachment can cause to humans. It also said it is doubling down on core productivity tools, such as coding assistants.

Insiders revealed difficulties in training the model to filter out illegal content while allowing adult themes.

At the same time, investors also grew wary of the potential for controversy, drawing parallels to xAI’s Grok model that generated non-consensual deepfakes of adults and minors.

It marks the second such closure in a week at the AI startup. The company announced earlier that it will discontinue its once-viral Sora AI video app and redirect resources toward enterprise AI products.
