New year celebrations were interrupted for Northern California on Sunday since severe storms, flooding and a magnitude 5.4 earthquake blocked roads, caused power outages and resulted in a casualty.
Earthquake
On Sunday morning, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake occurred about 30 miles south of Eureka and was centered about 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell. Though it was short with no casualties, the quake felt more violent than the one which occurred two weeks back on December 20, according to sources.
Intense storm, landslides
As the new year began, evacuation orders were in place in Northern California and warnings were given to nearby territories as intense storms caused flooding and landslides in the region. The storm also brought snowfall and heavy rain in and around the area affecting traveling on the first day of 2023 as major highways were closed.
The flash floods
Dan Quiggle, deputy fire chief of the Cosumnes Fire Department, said that one person was found dead inside a submerged vehicle on Sunday morning.
Power outage
More than 100,000 people were without power in the state on Sunday afternoon, per poweroutage.us.
