Imagine 125 degrees Fahrenheit. A quarter of the US could well be reeling under those temperatures—possibly even more—in just 30 years, according to new climate data.

More than 1,000 US counties that are home to 107.6 million Americans are expected to face brutal heat by 2053, non-profit First Street Foundation said in a press release Monday.

Inevitable
The “extreme heat belt” will stretch from the Northern Texas and Louisiana borders to Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

“We need to be prepared for the inevitable, that a quarter of the country will soon fall inside the Extreme Heat Belt with temperatures exceeding 125 (degrees) and the results will be dire,” First Street Foundation CEO Matthew Eby said.
