Universities nationwide are preparing for major funding disruptions from President Donald Trump.

He recently slashed $400 million in federal funds to Columbia University over its handling of pro-Palestinian protests.

The cut accounts for 30% of the school’s annual government contracts. Interim President Katrina Armstrong warned the move would immediately impact research, faculty, students, and patient care.

Not just Columbia
Harvard University and other schools, including Cornell, North Carolina State University, Notre Dame and University of Washington, have announced hiring freezes, citing the uncertainty around federal funding.

Some, like Northwestern, have initiated cost-cutting measures, while others have rescinded PhD offers due to financial uncertainty.

The cuts are announced through various measures.

The Trump administration has scrapped $800 million in research grants to Johns Hopkins. The University of Maine lost USDA funding over its refusal to ban trans athletes from competing in women’s sports.

Education experts warn funding cuts would stifle life-saving medical research. It could also lead to job losses and unemployment, inadvertently affecting the US economy.
