In a landmark election, Hungarian voters ended the 16-year tenure of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, electing pro-European challenger Peter Magyar.
The election saw a record-breaking 80% turnout, the highest in Hungary’s post-Communist history. Magyar’s Tisza party secured over 53% of the vote, compared to 37% for Orban’s Fidesz party.
The result also deals a blow to global nationalist movements.
Orban is well-known for his closeness and support for President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. His defeat comes despite a high-profile visit from Vice President JD Vance just days before the vote.
