Louisiana reported the country’s first severe case of avian influenza when a patient was hospitalized with bird flu, according to the CDC.

The person was exposed to sick and dead backyard flocks, the agency said Wednesday. It added that there was no exposure to dairy cows or their related products.

This year has seen 60+ mild human cases of bird flu.

Yesterday, California declared a state of emergency over the spread of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cattle.
