Initially, Oasis listed a ticket at $180|Will Fresch|CC BY-SA 2.0
The UK government said it plans to scrutinize Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing after Oasis fans were left disappointed as they couldn’t secure tickets to the band’s reunion tour, the price of which roughly doubled as they waited online.
Initially listed at $180, some tickets skyrocketed to over $460.
Ticketmaster, the vendor, attributed the price increase to market value set by the event organizer.
The pricing model echoes past controversies, such as Bruce Springsteen’s $5,000 tickets and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour pricing problems amid high demand that led the US Justice Department to sue Ticketmaster parent Live Nation this year.
Issues faced with tactics like dynamic pricing and “drip pricing,” where ticketing platforms add extra charges at checkout, have prompted calls for regulatory reform globally.
