Donald Trump assumed office as the 47th President of the United States on Monday and didn’t take long after that to sign several executive orders ranging from border security and energy to trade and economic policies.

These orders reversed many Democratic policies and laid the groundwork for his administration’s priorities.

Crackdown on border security
Trump proposed sweeping changes to US immigration policy, issuing 10 executive orders targeting legal and illegal immigration.

He declared a national emergency at the US–Mexico border to restart border wall construction and directed armed forces to provide services to boost border security. Trump also plans to end birthright citizenship for children. The President also suspended refugee resettlement programs and intensified deportation efforts.

Trade and economic policies
Trump ordered a review of existing tariff policies with other nations and to specifically look into trade practices with China, Mexico and Canada. He vowed to create a new External Revenue Service to focus on tariff collection.

Trump also signed an executive order to allow TikTok to continue operating in the US for 75 days.

A memorandum aimed at combating consumer inflation was also signed.

Federal workforce and DOGE
Trump signed an executive order to establish the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Led by billionaire Elon Musk, the agency aims to streamline federal operations and review spending. However, the task force’s Vivek Ramaswamy, who was supposed to lead it along with Musk, left DOGE as he mulls running for governor of Ohio.

Meanwhile, hours after the order was signed, DOGE was sued over its constitutionality.

Trump also froze federal hiring and mandated a return to full-time, in-person work for federal employees.

Environmental and energy orders
Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement once again. The process is set to take effect in January 2026 officially.

During his first term, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement, ratified by 195 countries in 2015 to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, Trump authorized new pipelines and relaxed restrictions on oil and gas extraction in Alaska to boost US energy production.

The US, a leading carbon emitter contributing 22% of atmospheric CO2 since 1950, is the only country to have withdrawn from the agreement. Critics argue that abandoning the pact could harm future climate action and economic growth.

Gender definition and DEI
Trump issued an order defining gender strictly as male or female, based on reproductive cells at conception, and declared that they cannot be changed. The decision could affect policies related to gender identity in schools, workplaces and public spaces. Trump also revoked federal DEI programs through an executive order.

Other orders
Trump issued pardons for nearly 1,500 individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol attack. He also signed an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska’s mountain Denali to the Gulf of America and Mount McKinley, respectively.
