Congress faces a Friday deadline to prevent the government shutdown

The House narrowly voted 217 to 213 on Tuesday to pass a stopgap funding bill that will keep the government operational through September.

The GOP-led legislation saw just one Republican (Rep. Thomas Massie) oppose it and one Democrat (Rep. Jared Golden) support it.

The bill increases spending for defense, veterans’ health and immigration enforcement while cutting non-defense budgets below 2024 levels.

It now heads to the GOP-controlled Senate, which faces a Friday deadline to avert a government shutdown. The measure requires at least 60 votes, making Democratic support crucial.

However, several Senate Democrats remain undecided, preferring a shorter-term funding fix.
