Donald Trump endorses Mike Johnson ahead of House speaker vote

President-elect Donald Trump endorsed House Speaker Mike Johnson ahead of the January 3 vote to elect a new speaker.

Posting to Truth Social, Trump said the Republicans should not blow the opportunity to maintain a majority in the House and that “Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement.”

His words could help Louisiana Republican Johnson secure enough support amid opposition from some right-wing hardliners upset over recent spending issues.

Johnson is set to have a slim 219-215 majority on this week’s vote. He will likely be able to afford just one Republican defection and still be reelected.

Meanwhile, the Democrats maintain that they will all vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
