Netflix and Microsoft join hands on ad-supported plans to boost dwindling subscriptions|Theglobalpanorama|CC BY-SA 2.0

If you find Netflix’s current subscription rates too high, don’t fret. The streaming giant is teaming up with Microsoft to bring you a cheaper plan—that is, if you don’t mind ads.

Netflix, which has resisted commercials on its platform for years, announced Wednesday that the streaming service chose Microsoft for its ad-supported service.

‘Early days’
Further details of the partnership have yet to be revealed.

“It’s very early days, and we have much to work through. But our long-term goal is clear: More choice for consumers and a premium, better-than-linear TV brand experience for advertisers,” Netflix COO Greg Peters said.

Shrinking base
In April, Netflix announced that it was planning to roll out an ad-supported tier after losing nearly 200,000 subscribers within three months, owing to its relatively high subscription prices.
