An upside-down pineapple in your shopping cart implies that you’re single and available

Singles are increasingly crowding Spain’s supermarkets every night with upside-down pineapples in their shopping carts to let other singles know they’re available. The viral TikTok-driven trend even resulted in police standby in some cases.

The idea is to visit a supermarket, like Mercadona, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., place a pineapple upside down in your shopping cart, and head to the wine aisle to find others doing the same. If you like someone, you bump your cart into theirs to signal interest.

It is the real-life equivalent of swiping right, but supermarket employees dread the trend. They are left dealing with unruly crowds and non-purchased goods. The staff even hide pineapples for an hour every evening.

A huge crowd of singles showed up at a Mercadona in Bilbao, causing chaos. The police had to be called in, but none were arrested.

Despite these incidents, the trend continues to gain popularity. Supermarkets like Lidl have joined in with their own fruit-based dating games involving watermelons.
