Venezuela handed over fugitive defense contractor Leonard Francis (also known as “Fat Leonard”) to the US in a high-stakes prisoner exchange. He was involved in a Navy bribery scandal.

The deal, confirmed by the White House, also saw the release of 10 detained Americans.

In turn, Venezuela secured the release of financier and close ally of President Nicolas Maduro, Alex Saab. The exchange also involved the release of political prisoners.

Why?
The move marks a significant effort by the Biden administration to improve relations with Venezuela, a major oil-producing nation. It follows the recent suspension of some sanctions, with President Maduro committing to fair conditions for the 2024 presidential election.

Critics express concerns about the deal setting the precedent of trading prisoners and incentivizing hostage-taking abroad.
