Ne Zha 2, the Chinese animation sequel about a mythical child warrior, has brought in nearly $1.7 billion since its January 29 release. It has become the world’s highest-grossing animated film, surpassing Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

Over 99% of the movie’s sales came from mainland China, reports Reuters.

It was made on a $80 million budget and is now China’s highest-grossing film and the first non-Hollywood film to enter the global box office’s Top 10. It is the eighth highest-grossing film of all time.

The movie also set an IMAX record in China, surpassing Avengers: Endgame by over $20 million.

Ne Zha 2 showcases Chinese movies’ popularity in the country, where Hollywood movies often ruled the box office.
