Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is seeking access to the IRS’s highly secure Internal Data Retrieval System (IDRS), raising concerns within the agency. The system holds sensitive taxpayer information, including personal IDs and bank data.

Under pressure from the White House, the IRS is considering a deal allowing DOGE personnel, including software engineer Gavin Kliger, to assist with IT modernization for 120 days, potentially renewing his stay. Kliger must maintain confidentiality and protect taxpayer information.

However, experts warn against granting political appointees access to such sensitive data, typically restricted to tax administration needs.

DOGE aims to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in government systems but faces criticism over its access to personal tax data.

The IRS is also gearing up for mass Trump-ordered layoffs this week, which could see as many as 10,000 probationary employees leave post in the middle of the tax filing season.
