Southern California experienced the first of two atmospheric river storms, causing heavy rains, flash floods, mudslides and rockslides and road closures since Thursday. The second storm is expected to hit late Saturday and last through Wednesday.
Long Beach was particularly affected, with rainwater flooding on a freeway and adjacent streets, which submerged many vehicles. A motorist had to be rescued after being trapped in an underwater car.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of “life-threatening impacts” and predicts 4-to-8-inch rainfall totals, with regions from Monterey to San Diego to be heavily hit.
The atmospheric river storms have intensified due to unusually elevated sea surface temperatures linked to human-induced climate change. Experts say it could improve California’s water supply.
