New York City plunged into chaos yesterday as storm Ophelia unleashed torrential rain, inundating streets, schools and subways with surging water.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for NYC, Long Island and Hudson Valley, cautioning people of the life-threatening flash floods.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) suspended multiple subway lines, while LaGuardia Airport closed a terminal.

The storm, driven by a relentless low-pressure system, is set to exit over the Atlantic Ocean by Sunday.

Record-setting rain
The downpour marked one of the wettest Septembers for New York in history, reaching 13.74 inches, close to the all-time high of 16.82 inches recorded in 1882.

The John F Kennedy International Airport saw nearly 8 inches of rain in a single day, a record since 1948.
