At least 10 deaths involving car crashes and exposure to freezing temperatures were reported yesterday as a rare winter storm blanketed much of Texas and Florida with several inches of snow.

Schools, government offices and roads across the region were closed, and thousands of flights were delayed or canceled.

Authorities warned the arctic cold would persist through Wednesday and encouraged residents to stay inside as icy roads in South Texas have led to several vehicle crashes.
