Hurricane Helene causes widespread damage in the Southeast

Helene devastated Florida when it made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane on Thursday. It pummeled along the southeastern US as it lost strength yesterday, leaving 4.5 million customers without power. 

The storm caused severe flooding, destroyed crops, and triggered landslides in Appalachia, resulting in at least 40 fatalities.

Many people were trapped in damaged buildings as the storm moved through Georgia and the Carolinas. Emergency services conducted rescues, and hospitals faced power outages. 

In Florida, communities dealt with extensive flooding and damage to homes and infrastructure.

Authorities warned residents across several states to remain cautious of flash floods and landslides. The storm’s effects will linger, with light rain expected on the East Coast.
