North Carolina saw a disruption in FEMA aid work after reports of violent threats against workers
Threats against federal emergency personnel in western North Carolina have disrupted recovery efforts in some communities affected by Hurricane Helene after threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency workers were reported.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man, William Jacob Parsons, 44, for allegedly threatening FEMA employees with a handgun and rifle, prompting a temporary halt in recovery efforts.
False rumors and misinformation, including claims of militia targeting relief workers, have worsened tensions. Nearly 40% of residents impacted by the storm are rejecting federal aid due to these false claims, complicating recovery in the region.
Authorities have not found any evidence of organized militia involvement.
